Two women are suing Apple over AirTag stalking incidents

Apple was a short while ago sued by two women who claim AirTags have been used to violate their privateness.

In the months pursuing the launch of the AirTag, privateness advocates expressed fears about the tracking machine. Apple instructs buyers to attach the Bluetooth tracker to important things that they might drop, this sort of as keys, wallets, or backpacks. Sad to say, even with Apple’s promises that the AirTag is “stalker proof,” a selection of worrying reports suggest usually.

AirTag privacy considerations raised in new lawsuit

According to 1 of the two females suing Apple, an ex-boyfriend planted an AirTag in the wheel nicely of a tire on her car or truck in purchase to locate her immediately after she moved to prevent his harassment. He had also coloured the AirTag with a sharpie and tied it up in a plastic bag to disguise it.

The other girl suggests her ex-partner, who had been harassing her for her whereabouts, set an AirTag into her child’s backpack to monitor their movements. She eradicated and tried to disable the very first AirTag, but observed one more in the child’s backpack quickly just after.

“Ms. Doe [the second woman] continues to dread for her safety—at minimum amount, her stalker has evidenced a determination to continuing to use AirTags to monitor, harass, and threaten her, and continues to use AirTags to find Plaintiff’s spot,” the lawsuit claimed. “[She] seeks to bring this action anonymously owing to the authentic hazard that currently being recognized would expose her to increased danger of harassment and/or actual physical damage.”

Previously this calendar year, Apple began updating the AirTag in an attempt to get rid of undesired monitoring. Apple extra new privateness warnings all through the set up course of action, gave recipients of an undesirable tracking inform the potential to find close by AirTags, enhanced the volume of the unwanted tracking alert audio, and a lot more. But that did not make the AirTag “stalker proof.”

“While Apple has constructed safeguards into the AirTag item, they are woefully insufficient, and do small, if just about anything, to promptly warn people today if they are currently being tracked,” the lawsuit adds. At the time of crafting, Apple experienced yet to comment on the lawsuit.
